The A3 e-tron, originally revealed last April, comes packing a 26.5-kWh lithium-ion battery pack good for a range of 90 miles, with a 100-kW (around 130 horsepower) motor driving the front wheels and putting out 199 pound-feet of torque. Performance isn't particularly impressive, with the A3 hitting 60 mph in around 11 seconds and topping out at 90 mph. And with a 400-volt rapid-charger, Audi claims the battery pack can be juiced up in around four hours.

Prius plug in

The Plug-In is so much cleaner than the standard Prius – which boasts an already good 85g/km figure – because of its larger battery pack that allows the car to travel 15.5 miles on electric power alone.

Unlike a full electric vehicle, which can take as long as 12 hours to recharge, the Prius Plug-In takes just 90 minutes to charge up. Once the battery is empty, the Prius switches to the petrol engine to deliver a combined range of 769 miles.

The Focus Electric can be driven up to 100 miles on a single charge depending on driving habits. The average driver drives 29 miles a day, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics website.

The seventh-generation Volkswagen Golf will be available in early 2013 in a new electric version, equipped with an EV motor powered by lithium-ion battery. The news come from Car and Driver, which also reveals that the German leaders would choose the friendlier name E-Golf instead of the initial proposed blue-e-motion, an acronym used to define a Golf prototype. The German Group will be using the benefits of the modular MQB platform and therefore requires no further testing, as the innovative platform allows using traditional or alternative engines in the same mounting position and without restriction.
Finally, as a reminder the last blue-e-motion Golf used an electric motor powered by lithium batteries, consisting of 30 modules each, mounted in the transmission tunnel, under the rear seat. It developed an output of 115 hp and 270 Nm of torque, reaching a top speed of 135 km/h, cracking the 0-100 km/h in just 11.8 seconds. Volkswagen has also calculated an increase in weight of 205 kg compared to the Golf BlueMotion.

Following on from the Nissan Leaf story, maybe the police should get these instead. The all electric Audi R8 e-tron, which goes on sale later this year has lapped the Nurburgring circuit in 8 minutes, 9 seconds.

How fast is that? Well a conventional Audi R8 V8 managed it in 8 minutes and 4 seconds in 2007, so it is pretty much identical to the standard car. That is mighty impressive, although we should point out that the e-tron had its speed limiter raised from its standard 124 mph to 155 mph for this run.

The output of the motors is 375 bhp and 605 lb/ft of torque, which provides a zero to 62mph time of 4.6 seconds. Electricity comes from a rechargeable lithium-ion battery storing 49 KWh of energy: enough for a distance of about 133 miles. That is one big battery pack – approximately twice the size of the unit in the Nissan Leaf.

Nevertheless, extensive use of aluminium and carbon fibre has kept the weight down to 1780 kg, compared to 1565 kg of the standard R8 V8. A 200kg penalty is about as good as current technology allows, but the good news is the extra weight is very low down, so the centre of gravity of the e-tron is probably better than in the conventional model.

Incidentally, Audi also put in a lap time with the standard 124 mph speed limiter in place. It managed 8 minutes 26 seconds, which is the same as an Audi S5.

唔係呀?  769miles?! 即係成千二km!!!! 七個位, 仲只係要叉個半鐘... 無咁理想掛? 如果係真, 小巴變都晒prius.

Competition is hotting up for the eco-warriors' car of choice, with Toyota claiming that its new Prius Plug-in delivers better value for money than its key rival, the Vauxhall Ampera.

Toyota says that the Prius Plug-In, which is one of a new generation of extended-range hybrids, offers a higher specification than the Ampera, plus more seats on board and a potential saving of almost £2,000 on costs over three years/60,000 miles, thanks to its greater range and quicker battery charging time.

According to the carmaker, the Prius has a driving range of 769 miles versus the Ampera's 300 miles, while charging time is 90 minutes compared to four hours for the Vauxhall. Naturally add in a higher cost-to-charge and higher list price (£32,250 versus £28,630 after a £5k government grant) and over three years, the Prius works out almost £2,000 cheaper. This figure also takes into account adding a navigation system and rear-view camera to the Ampera, which the Toyota has as standard.

Meanwhile, Vauxhall has recently announced a new entry-level Ampera Earth which starts at £29,995 after the government subsidy, £2,255 cheaper than the existing Ampera Positiv. Vauxhall environmental strategy manager Ian Allen said that he expects the more highly specified models to be the biggest sellers but that the Earth iteration would appeal to some electric pioneers and companies.

死貨.

The production of the Peugeot iOn and Citroen C-Zero has been temporarily suspended due to lack of demand for the diminutive, but very expensive, electric cars, according to Japanese business daily, Nikkei.

The two models are actually made by Mitsubishi in Japan, as the i-Miev, and then sold under the badges of the two French companies. A recent price cut of £5,000 to £21,216 does not seem to have helped much, given that the much larger and far more convincing Nissan Leaf is priced at £25,990.

Mitsubishi agreed to supply 100,000 of the cars to PSA Peugeot-Citroen in 2010. Sales of the two models in the UK are currently running at around 100 per year, so that just leaves another 99,900 buyers to find in other European countries – in the middle of the continent's worst recession for 80 years.

The "French" twins are basically the old Mitsubishi i city car converted to run on electric power. The cost of the petrol-engined i used to be £8,800 in 2009. Hence buyers are being asked to pay over £10,000 extra for the battery conversion, even after a £5,000 government grant. That would buy a lot of AA batteries.

Serial hybrid (i.e. engine running as range extender) is proved to be more economical. Cars run in full electric mode all the times, the engine is just to kick in for charging the battery. It release the range anxiety of EV car owners while keeping the price down.
I'm interested to develop a high efficient 1-cyl or 2-cyl engine for serial hybrid too.

Infiniti will show a concept for an electrically-powered executive model at the Paris Motor Show – but there is little doubt that it will go into production.

"The Infiniti LE Concept is a 'production intent' concept and most of what you see will become a reality," said Bernard Loire, Vice President of Infiniti Europe, Middle East, India and Africa.

At around 4.7m long, the LE Concept is a similar size to the executive-sized Infiniti G Saloon. The drivetrain offers 132 BHP, along with 325Nm (240lb ft) of torque. Nissan says the battery system is a proven laminated 24 kWh lithium-ion (Li-ion) design with quick charger that can deliver an 80% charge in 30 minutes. Essentially, it sounds like an uprated Nissan Leaf drivetrain put into an Infiniti body.

However, one new piece of technology being examined is wireless recharging. This uses inductive charging, just like a pan on an inductive hob. The driver simply parks the car over the pad and wireless contact is made automatically. The high-frequency, non-contact charging, controlled by the car's display or by smartphone, is safe for children and pets and can be installed in a home garage.

The LE is expected to go on sale in 2014.

The pictured model, which looks like a normal SLS AMG at the first glance, is actually one of the first prototypes for the production version of the all-electric Mercedes AMG SLS E-cell, and we got two pieces of evidence to sustain that. First off, the lack of sound, but that’s hard to show on a photo so you we’ll have to take the word of our photographers for that. Second, the lack of exhaust pipes, which is something much easier to show: just look at the photos and you will see.
The E-Cell was pre-viewed as a concept car some year ago, and this set of spy shots just demonstrates that Mercedes and AMG did not forget about the project. Actually, we were kind of wondering when Mercedes was going to reply to the awesome R8 e-tron created by historic rival Audi. Well, these pics are the answer we were all waiting for.
The concept was powered by four electric motors - a pair on each axle - and was credited with a toal output of 526 hp and 649 Nm of peak torque, redlining at 12.000 rpm. Mercedes AMG has a set a target of 120 miles of range for the definitive production version of the model, whereas the original concept had a range of 90 km. If everything will go on according to plan, the SLS E-cell should see the light of the day in early 2013.

A conventional Smart starts at €10,275 ($13,489 U.S.) in Germany,
a conventional VW Up! is €9,850 ($12,931 U.S.).
The ForTwo ED has been priced at €18,910 ($24,824 U.S.) plus €65 ($85.33 U.S.) per month for the battery
The Renault Zoe – not German, we know – will be slightly more expensive at €20,600 (around $27k), plus a monthly fee for the battery,
Pricing for this landmass hasn't been announced, but the electric competition generally hits the mid-$30K mark:
the four-door, four-seat Mitsubishi i-MiEV sets the low end at $29,625,
the Nissan Leaf at $35,200,
the BMW i3 is rumored to come in around $35,000,
the Fiat 500E is predicted to be right there, too, and that's supposedly after Fiat swallows a hefty loss on each car.
Chevrolet sets the high bar with the range-extended Volt at $39,145.
