SAAB to Koenigsegg!!

General Motors has reached an agreement to sell Saab to a group of investors led by Koenigsegg, the Swedish supercar maker.

As part of the deal GM said there would be $600m (£367m) of funding from the European Investment Bank (EIB), guaranteed by the Swedish government. It is possible that no money will change hands between GM and its new owner for Saab and its assets.

The buyer is called Koenigsegg Group, and consists of what is described as "a consortium of private investors led by Koenigsegg Automotive AB."

The sale is expected to close by the end of the third quarter of this year. Saab filed for bankruptcy protection on 20 February and has been restructuring since then to improve its appeal to potential new owners.

GM Europe President, Carl-Peter Forster said Saab is a brand with “great potential”. “Closing this deal represents the best chance for Saab to emerge a stronger company,” he added.

“Koenigsegg Group's unique combination of innovation, entrepreneurial spirit and financial strength, combined with Koenigsegg's proven ability to create world-class Swedish performance cars in a highly efficient manner, made it the right choice for Saab as well as for General Motors."

Saab has become the latest manufacturer to fall victim to the unpredictable motor industry. A statement, issued by General Motors has revealed that Koenigsegg Group AB has pulled out of the deal to buy fellow Swedish car maker, Saab.

General Motors revealed that they are "very disappointed with the decision to pull out of the Saab purchase", but offered no explanation for why the deal fell through.

GM are insisting that not all is lost for the Saab brand, with company president and CEO Fritz Henderson claiming they will "take the next several days to assess the situation and will advise on the next steps next week."

One possibility is that other buyers, who expressed an interest before Koenigsegg, may again step up to complete a takeover.

Saab is to be closed down by General Motors, after no new buyer for the troubled Swedish firm could be found. Some 3400 people employed directly by Saab are expected to lose their jobs, and 1100 dealers worldwide will have to find new franchises.

GM’s European president Nick Reilly said no deal could be reached with the sole remaining bidder, Spyker Cars.

I would put my 2 cents down that a PRC company will jump out from the blue and pick up this company SAAB for next to nothing in price!
