Speed camera boss admits doing 102mph

The boss of a speed camera firm has pleaded guilty to charges of driving more than 100mph on a 70mph A-road.

Tom Riall is the chief executive of Serco, a company which has provided more than 5,000 speed cameras to the UK. He appeared at Sudbury Magistrates' Court today after he was caught speeding on a dual carriageway in Newmarket, Suffolk on January 4.

Riall was photographed doing 102mph in his 2.7-litre Volvo as he travelled to a business meeting.

Prior to his court appearance Mr Riall, a former soldier, admitted to speeding.

He said: 'I regret driving at this speed and will ensure I mitigate it in future. In my job, I understand the consequences of speed and want to apologise to the court.'

In 2008 Serco led an anti-speeding campaign called Safe Drive Stay Alive, which was backed by the government.

Mr Riall said at the time: 'In courts and prisons we see the direct consequences of reckless and dangerous driving every single day. For far too many young people it ends with a prison sentence - but for the families left behind the pain lasts much longer.

'Serco is delighted to support Safe Drive Stay Alive because we want to help bring about change for the young drivers and all those whose lives are affected.'
