TOKYO—Mazda Motor Corp. 7261.TO +0.93% and Fiat S.p.A F.MI -2.38% . said Wednesday that the two car makers will join forces on the development and production of a new two-seater sports car based on the Japanese car maker's MX-5 architecture.

The lightweight, rear-wheel-drive sports car, which will be available under the Mazda and Alfa Romeo brands, will be manufactured at Mazda's plant in Hiroshima, the two companies said in a joint statement.

Production of the car for Alfa Romeo is expected to start at the Hiroshima plant in 2015. The new model will be powered by engines unique to each brand.

The two car makers also said they have agreed to discuss further opportunities for cooperation in Europe.
