Peugeot releases the first official photos of the new 208 GTI, which will be fully revealed at the imminent 2012 Paris Motor Show. The most powerful version of the little French hatch will have a total length equal to that of the ‘regular’ 208, but will get all of the muscle showcased by the 208 GTI Concept, meaning bigger fenders, a 10 mm wider front track and a 20 mm wider rear track. Definitely worth mentioning is the serious weight loss of the model: at 1160 kg, the 208 GTI will be 165 kg lighter than the model it will replace, the 207 GTI, and 80 less than Renault Clio RS.
Under its hood there will be a turbocharged 4-cylinder 1.6-litre THP petrol engine, credited with an output of 200 hp and 275 Nm of peak torque - the same unit equipping the Peugeot RCZ - mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox. As for the performance, the 208 GTI will burn the 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in less than 7 seconds, with the French engineers who have thrown in some extra work in order to make the exhaust sound as much satisfying as possible.
The car will also benefit from a lowered suspension, recalibrated dampers, a roll cage with increased structural rigidity and a quite generous braking system featuring 302 mm ventilated discs at the front and and 249 mm ones at the back. The steering system underwent some upgrading as well in order to ensure a better driving experience. More details about the Peugeot 208 GTI will be revealed in the days leading up to the Paris Motor Show. |
