Lotus is getting a shot in the arm courtesy of corporate parent DRB-Hicom, which has announced a 100-million pound ($152.3M USD at today's rates) investment in the Hethel, UK-based manufacturer. The troubled brand was also in the news last week, with DRB announcing a new, three-year plan that would see variants of existing models introduced.

The money will create 100 new jobs in Hethel, with 45 new engineers, 40 manufacturing operatives and 18 university grads joining the team. Lotus has already seen an uptick in sales this year, according to a Norfolk-based news site, with 40 to 45 cars being produced per week and 722 road cars and 45 race cars sold between January and May. Even sales in the UK have seen a big jump – Lotus only moved 70 units in 2012, but it's already sold 80 cars in the first half of 2013.

Better yet, Lotus is citing an increased demand for its cars around the globe as the motive behind the new hires. While still quite uncertain, Lotus looks like it might finally be on the right track.

Ex-Dany Bahar Lotus Esprit for sale
A specially fettled Lotus Esprit V8, built for Dany Bahar, has come on the market.
In 2010 during Dany Bahar’s reign as CEO of Lotus, he commissioned the factory to extensively rebuild a 2002 Lotus Esprit V8, and according to The Lotus Forums, it’s for sale.

The factory work included a fully rebuilt engine and gearbox, full respray in pearlescent white, and a unique re-trimmed leather and suede interior – all done less than 1000 miles ago.

The car is fitted with the many of the ‘Final Edition’ options that from the very last 2003 models. This includes AP Racing four-pot front and Brembo rear brake callipers, centre exit exhaust as well as the round rear lights.

After being displayed at various shows, including the 2011 Goodwood Festival of Speed, the car will be sold with just 36,000miles on the clock. Contact your local Lotus dealer for details.

Only in Lotus-land. At the same time it was opening its Ferrari-rivalling store in London, Lotus said it was pulling out of the Paris Motor Show in September.

In fact, the stories are two sides of the same coin. The flagship store was the brainchild of Dany Bahar, the recently-sacked Chief Executive, and Lotus's owners no doubt found that all the bills for the store had already been paid, so they might as well go along with it. The Paris Show stand has presumably not been paid for, so they could get out of it. It would also have been extremely embarrassing to have appeared at Paris. It was there in 2010 that Lotus announced its insane plan to launch five new models in five years – also the brainchild of Dany Bahar.

On the plus side, Lotus has announced a facelifted Exige S, which takes pride of place in the new store. Interestingly, DRB-Hicom, the Malaysian Group that also owns Proton, have told a Malaysian newspaper that they were offered the princely sum of £1 for Lotus by another car manufacturer in return for getting Lotus's debts off its hands. DRB-Hicom declined, but the newspaper, The Star, said Lotus will require an input of £200 million to see it through 2012 and into 2013.

反告Lotus無理解僱
Lotus and parent company DRB-Hicom haven't offered much commentary on the suspension and eventual firing of former CEO Dany Bahar. European newspapers and websites, on the other hand, have been having a field day reporting on various financial missteps rumored to have taken place with Bahar at the helm.

Amidst reports that Bahar was fired due to the misappropriation of company funds for personal reasons, Swiss newspaper Bilanz (via MSN UK) is now claiming that Bahar plans to sue his former company for wrongful termination. The paper reports that Bahar denies the allegations made against him and will file suit in London's High Court.

As you might expect with litigation in the offing, neither Bahar nor Lotus are commenting on the report.

Lotus has confirmed that chief executive Dany Bahar has been dismissed with immediate effect.

Bahar was suspended from his £1.2m position two weeks ago by DRB-Hicom – the Malaysian conglomerate which owns Lotus – following a complaint about his conduct.

In an official statement, Group Lotus said: “The decision was made by the board of Group Lotus plc following the results of an investigation into a complaint made against him by the company’s penultimate holding company, DRB-HICOM Berhad.”

Aslam Farikullah, who has 26 years' experience in the automotive industry, has been announced as the company’s chief operating officer with immediate effect.

In recent months, there has been speculation that Lotus - which had planned to launch a new Esprit in 2014 -would be sold to a Chinese company.

But Dato' Sri Haji Mohd Khamil Jamil, group managing director of DRB-HICOM Berhad, said: "I would like to assure you that we remain committed to ensure the ongoing and future business operations of the Lotus Group as we take the Lotus Group to the next level to remain relevant in the global automotive industry.

"I look forward to bringing mutual benefits to not only DRB-HICOM and PROTON Holdings Berhad but also the Lotus Group and its employees as well as contribute to the growth of the British automotive industry."

Since they are owned by Proton and it was really proton who paid for their F1 this year, they do need the profit from the niche market if they want to keep on the F1 racing.
