Luca Marmorini, head motorist of Ferrari said to autosprint that Ferrari has a different proposal regarding the new engine regulations.
What Ferrari suggests is to adopt a 1800cc V6 cutting a section of 2 cylinders equivalnt from the current engines. The explanation is in cost reduction as the new V6 would be derived by the current engines while a brand new turbo engine would rocket research and development costs.

Yes, indeed.  The cylinder block came from the ordinary 4 cylinder BMW street engine!  Virtually all other teams use V6 at that time!  Ford invested millions $$$ to develop a V6 twin turbo for just 1 seasons,  which was completely crazy!  There was a TV documentary program that followed the Ford F1 Engine development at that time, and a brief comparison was made against the BMW 4 cylinder F1 turbo engine!  I was at early 20s and was totally fascinated by all these technologies, put in a couple of job applications to Rover and Ford but were never selected.
